After the massive success of The New Edition Story that took place over a course of three nights on BET, Bell Biv Devoe had the most genius marketing plan. On January 27th, the day after the show’s finale, they released their fourth studio album Three Stripes to rave fan reviews. The album kicks off with Doug E. Fresh beatboxing and introducing Ronnie, Mike, and Ricky on “Ready.”
BBD are different and don’t feel the need to lie to get women. “I’m Betta” tells the story of a lady being mistreated by her man but BBD knows that she can do better with them and become a better version of herself.
“Hot Damn” is a self-explanatory track about a gorgeous lady with the best dance moves. Her presence alone is enough to make you say “hot damn.”
“Run” is the first song BBD has released in 15 years and acts as the album’s lead single. The song tells the story of a relationship where the man is tired of only getting 50% from his woman. The song samples “Hypnotize” by the Notorious B.I.G.
The next song “All Dat There” is a change in sound from the first half of the album and features a more modern feel. The song is about a lady with a nice body who is making them lose their minds. It sounds like the fellas should take their own advice and “never trust a big butt and a smile” because she is trouble.
The fellas are begging their lady to stay on the track “Don’t Go.”
In what seems like a 90s dream come true, BBD is joined by SWV for the song “Finally” about finally getting things right and finding the perfect person for you.
As if the collaboration with SWV wasn’t enough, BBD is joined by Boyz II Men for the song “One More Try.” The song starts with a clip of Don Cornelius introducing BBD on Soul Train.
The album closes with an ode to the special ladies in their lives in the form of the song “Incredible.” They admire their women for their style, class, and ability to do everything flawlessly. Their ladies don’t seem to know how incredible they are so BBD wants to let them know.
After a 15 year hiatus, many fans were likely surprised to hear new music from the trio. On Three Stripes, BBD was able to provide listeners with the fun and feel good music they have always excelled with and adding a modern twist. It’s always good to hear new music from the guys.
