My condolences to anyone who has ever lost me
And, to anyone who got lost in me
Or, to anyone who ever felt they took a loss with me
My apologies for the misunderstanding or the lack thereof
I'm sorry you missed the God in me
On the track “Keep On,” Kehlani doesn’t understand why her lover keeps taking her back with open arms because she knows she hasn’t been the best that she could have been to him.
Kehlani is focused on her career but she is open to having a “Distraction,” someone who she can have a little fun with. She isn’t looking for anything serious but she wants someone who understands her hustle but wants to make her feel good. The song was released as her second single on July 23, 2016.
On the track “Piece of Mind,” Kehlani is reflecting on a past relationship that is consuming her mind. She is trying to forget about all the stressing she did during the relationship and she’s learning to keep her peace of mind. Her past lover made her feel like she wasn’t worth love and wouldn’t be anything without them but she has proven them wrong.
The album’s fourth single “Undercover” was released on January 5th on Apple Beats 1 radio station, hosted by Zane Lowe. Kehlani doesn’t care what people have to say about her relationship and she just wants to say “fuck it” because one way or another she’s going to continue loving the special person in her life. The song incorporates the chorus of Akon’s classic song “Don’t Matter.”
“CRZY” was released as the album’s first single on July 14, 2016. Kehlani loves the challenges she’s faced because they make her stronger. She lets listeners know not to count her out or discredit her because her passion and achievements speak for themselves.
Kehlani takes on those who slept on her on the track “Personal.” She no longer feels the need to waste her time trying to prove that she is talented and up next because her work speaks for itself. The song contains a sample from Aaliyah’s “Come Over.”
On “Not Used to It,” Kehlani finds herself in unfamiliar territory in her current relationship. She wants to open up to her partner and admit that she’s in love but she’s not used to the feeling. There’s pain behind her eyes and she finds it hard to open up about it. She grew up on the streets of Oakland where she has faced a lot of heartache and her experiences have caused her to run from her problems.
“Everything is Yours” finds Kehlani reminiscing about her first love. She has been feeling low for the past year but she knows her first love can make everything better.
“Advice” was released as the album’s third single. The inspiration for the song came after Kehlani ended a bad relationship where she was invested but she was being mistreated. She realized she should take her own advice and not only preach it to her listeners. She has described the song as a healing song for her because she recognized there were probably other girls going through the same thing.
On “Do U Dirty,” Kehlani knows that she’s a good woman but she’s still growing and will likely hurt the person in love with her. She’s young and still has a lot of living to do.
Kehlani doesn’t want her lover to lose themselves in her. They’re already complete without her andwhile she doesn’t want to ruin that she wants to be their “Escape.”
Kehlani is “Too Much” woman for her ex and she’s better off without them. She will miss certain things about her ex but they couldn’t handle her and it’s their loss. The song samples Aaliyah’s “More Than A Woman.”
Listeners are shown Kehlani’s sweeter side on the track “Get Like.” Usually she is shy and awkward but her lover can bring out a different side to her and that is the only person she steps outside of her shell for.
Kehlani finds herself stuck on one particular person and she wonders why she feels that way on the track “In My Feelings.” The song contains samples from New Edition’s “If This Isn’t Love.”
Kehlani wants someone to help her pick up the pieces when she’s going through tough times on the sweet ballad “Hold Me By The Heart.”
In a “Thank You” note, Kehlani thanks everyone who has helped her become the person she is today. She tweeted that the choir featured on the song are middle schoolers from her old art school choir.
The deluxe version of the album includes two additional songs: “I Wanna Be” and Gangsta.
On the song “I Wanna Be,” Kehlani wants to be the only girl her lover ever needs and she wants to know what it would take for that person to fall in love with her.
“Gangsta” is a track from the Suicide Squad soundtrack and it premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show. The song has a haunting quality that fits the movie perfectly. Kehlani yearns for a gangsta to love her better than she’s ever been loved before.
Kehlani is a Grammy nominated singer who adds freshness to the music world. Her music is raw, personal, and gritty which is the essence of her appeal. SweetSexySavage captures all sides of her and is titled perfectly. While at times the album seems a tad all over the place, it is a great collection of music that gives listeners a personal look into the 21-year-old songstress’s life.
