He first gained recognition in the underground music world following the release of his two independently released albums The Coming (2008) and The 2econd Coming (2009). Two years later, he was included as a part of BET’s “Music Matters” series, which has also featured artists such as Miguel, Melanie Fiona, Elle Varner, Big Sean, and Mack Wilds.
He released his debut single “Beautiful” after he was signed to RCA Records in 2013 and the album Mali Is… followed shortly after in the summer of 2014.
On June 2nd, he released his album The Transition of Mali. In an interview with Billboard Music, he described the album as a “full picture of the transition that I had to go through in order to get here.”
The single “Gonna Be Alright” is an upbeat and inspirational song about hope and faith. This song is perfect for listeners who are going through and need to hear some positivity. No matter what we may be going through, it’s going to be alright. The song was produced by profound producer Salaam Remi.
Jazmine Sullivan joins Mali Music on the track “Loved by You,” a beautiful duet about the overwhelming and amazing feeling love gives them. This song is definitely isn’t long enough.
Mali encourages listeners to dry their eyes and keep pushing forward on the track “Cryin’.” Don’t let life pass you by, dry your eyes and keep trying.
On the track “Dolla,” Mali sings about how hard it is to make money in this crazy shady world. He also sings about a woman who uses her body to make money.
Mali reflects on a past love that will always remain in his heart on the track “Still.” He realizes that he will always be in love with her because she holds the light to his heart.
Jhené Aiko joins Mali on the single “Contradiction” which was released in November 2015. The duo sings about how life will bring them back together even though they broke up. They have faith that despite them not being together they will find a way back to one another.
Sometimes Mali goes through dark times but he knows that with love and peace he will be alright. “My Life” starts and closes with Mali talking about how some people think they’re living when they’re really dead inside. They aren’t really hearing or seeing what’s going on around them.
“Sit Down For This” is the story of a man who is sick and feeling scared. He calls on God for a miracle to make things better. Along with “Contradiction,” this song was featured on the Chi-raq soundtrack.
Change is not always easy to handle and Mali realizes it on the track “Worth It.” Although everything may be changing around you, he encourages listeners to keep the faith to receive the blessings.
On the song “I Will” Mali is feeling a sense of regret over a past lover. When they were together he lost interest and now she’s getting married. He congratulates her and is happy she found her love but he finds it hard to walk away.
The album closes with the song “What You Done.” There’s no way that Mali can forget what God has done for him and his people. He is eternally grateful for his blessings.
Mali Music is an exceptional talent who deserves more recognition in the music world. His music is beautiful and uplifting and a breath of fresh air in a world filled with so much negativity.
