It’s that time of year again when we present our annual list of artists to look out for in the New Year and beyond.
Check out our list of Artists to Watch in 2017:
Alina Baraz is mostly a mystery but the Los Angeles beauty has been making waves since the release of her Urban Flora EP. Her sultry vocals are soothing and will transcend listeners into another world. While the details are still fuzzy, the songstress is set to release her debut album this year, according to her Twitter page.
The song “Caroline” by Aminé has quickly taken over airwaves within a matter of months. Aminé released his debut mixtape Odyssey to Me and the follow-up EP En Vogue in 2014. The following year, he released the mixtape Calling Brio. In 2016, he signed with Republic Records and his debut single has peaked at #11 on the Billboard charts. If his climb up the charts is a sign of things to come, he is here to stay.
Dave East is a rapper from East Harlem, NY who first gained recognition in 2014 following the release of his mixtape Black Rose. He is signed to Nas’ Mass Appeal Records label and has worked with a number of prominent artists, including Nas himself. East has released 10 mixtapes, the most recent being Kairi Chanel, which is named after his daughter, on September 30th. East was also featured as a part of the XXL 2016 Freshman Class.
The self-proclaimed living weirdo Devvon Terrell has gained popularity over the course of a little over a year due in part to his YouTube covers. He takes popular songs and recreates them into something totally different and mind blowing. He released his debut album Weird Sexy Cool in 2015 and the follow-up The Renaissance in 2016. His popularity continues to grow and he will without a doubt continue to blow our minds in 2017.
The Princess of Chicago rap Dreezy first got her musical start in 2012 but it wasn’t until 2016 that she blessed us with her debut album No Hard Feelings. The album took us on a journey and put the beauty on everyone’s radars. Her album spawned the singles “Body,” “Close to You,” “Spazz,” and “Wasted” and has peaked at number 15 on the Billboard R&B/ Hip Hop Albums chart. With the rising success of her latest single, I’m sure we will be hearing much more from Dreezy this year.
Dvsn, pronounced division, is a Canadian duo consisting of singer Daniel Daley and producer Ninteen85. The duo first gained recognition after their single “With Me” was premiered on Apple Beats 1 radio during the OVO Sound show and they can also be heard on Drake’s Views album. Their debut album Sept. 5th was released on March 27th. Following the release, they joined Drake and Future as an opening act on the Summer Sixteen Tour. With a cosign from Drake, they will certainly do great things in 2017.
Independent rapper Futuristic first gained popularity following the release of his album Dream Big in 2012. Since then, his single “The Greatest” reached over 14 million views on YouTube and his three most recent albums have made it to the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. He released his album As Seen on the Internet on August 26th via We’re the Future Records.
Powerhouse JoJo is perhaps one of the most underrated singers of our generation. She first appeared on the music scene as a teenager with the release of the breakout hit “Leave (Get Out)” in 2004. Following the release of her sophomore album The High Road in 2006, the singer seemingly disappeared. She reemerged on the scene years later as an adult and released the mixtape Take that Away from Me in 2010 and Agape in 2012. In 2013, she departed ways with her record label and started doing things her own way. On October 14th, she released her first studio album in nearly 10 years Mad Love, which was supported by the single “Fuck Apologies” featuring Wiz Khalifa. Hopefully JoJo will finally get the recognition she deserves this year because she certainly deserves it.
Post Malone first gained recognition with the release of his breakout hit “White Iverson” in 2015. Since then, he has worked with artists such as 50 Cent, Kanye West, and Young Thug to name a few. He was also selected as the opening act for Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour during the North American leg. On December 9th her released his debut album Stoney and has already stated that he will release the follow-up, Beerbongs & Bentleys in 2017.
Rapsody is a rapper from Snow Hill, NC who first got her solo start in 2008. Over the years she has worked with some of our favorite artists and continues to be an underrated success. Her skills are undeniable and we are sure to hear much more from her this year, especially since she signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label in July 2016.
Rapper Remy Ma is certainly no newcomer to the music industry, however, legal issues quickly halted her career years ago. After serving six years in prison, she was released on August 1, 2014 and has been hard at work ever since. She was a part of one of the biggest songs of 20166, “All the Way Up,” with Fat Joe and has released several features. Her collaboration album with Fat Joe Plato O Plomo is set for a February release and her sophomore studio album Seven Winters & Six Summers is forthcoming, though the release date is unclear. As she said years ago, she’s going to be a problem when she gets home.
Ro James is best known for his single “Permission” which was released in 2015. Last year, the single continued to dominate airwaves and was, and still is, one of my favorite songs. James released his debut album El Dorado on May 27, 2016 via ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records. James will headline his own tour this year and undoubtedly continue to release amazing music for the real R&B lovers out there.
Russ Vitale is perhaps one of the fastest rising artists of 2016 due in part to his hit single “What They Want.” In 2016, Russ signed with Columbia Records and has released a slew of songs since. If his career continues on this current path, he will be a household name in no time.
SZA is perhaps best known as the first lady of Top Dawg Entertainment and even though she is associated with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Schoolboy Q, among others, she is able to hold her own musically. SZA is a rare talent who has been on our radars since the release of her 2012 mixtape See. SZA. Run. After years of waiting, SZA announced that her highly anticipated debut album A will be released this year. She will certainly be a force to be reckoned with this year and I’m here for it.
William Singe is a singer from Australia who gained popularity due to his extensive list of covers on YouTube. He first got his start on The X Factor Australia and was a member of the group The Collective. In February of 2015, Singe left the group to focus on solo efforts and his career has been soaring since. He signed with RCA Records on July 29, 2016 and embarked on a sold out European tour shortly thereafter. This year, Singe will embark on a United States tour starting in New York on February 10th.
