When he released his first underground song, he was a freshman English major at the University of Albany, The State University of New York. After the completion of his English degree from SUNY Albany, he worked as a middle school English teacher in Brownsville and Bushwick, Brooklyn. He decided to leave teaching to pursue his hip-hop career full time.
He has been featured in the “Unsigned Hype” section of The Source Magazine, which garnered attention and eventually a record contract with Raw Shack records.
J-Live’s first album The Best Part featured production by DJ Premier, Prince Paul and Pete Rock. Although he had a lot of support on his album, it was shelved twice due to issues with Raw Shack Records and PayDay Records. He finally released the album in the fall of 2001 on his own record label, Triple Threat Productions.
Over the years, he has released a number of albums, such as, All of the Above (2002), The Hear After (2005), Then What Happened? (2008), S.P.T.A. (Said Person of that Ability) (2011) and Around the Sun this year. In addition to his albums, he released four extended plays: Always Has Been and Always Will Be were simultaneously released in 2003, Reveal the Secret (2007) and Undivided Attention in 2010.
The multi-talented rapper currently resides in Philadelphia and is married with three children. He also wrapped up a 20-date tour in April 2014.
