While a student at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md., she was musically inspired by her classmate and local rapper/producer Oddisee. It wasn’t until she transferred to American University in D.C. that she started to sing in local jazz clubs. Soon after, she joined an indie band called Dizzy Spells.
Kelela decided to relocate to Los Angeles in 2010. In L.A., she connected with band Teengirl Fantasy and contributed to their 2013 album Tracer.
While trying to pursue her dreams in L.A., she met Prince William from the label Fade to Black. Soon after, she released her debut mixtape Cut 4 Me, which earned her praise from critics as well as Solange Knowles and Björk.
