Tinashe is a singer, songwriter and actress who made a name for herself last year with the release of her DJ Mustard-produced party song “2 On.” She released her debut solo album Aquarius on October 7, 2014. Julianne Escobedo Shepherd of Rolling Stone praised Tinashe for her self-assured attitude and has said “Throughout, Tinashe’s sweet soprano sets up a hazy mood that’s easy to get lost in.” Her single “Pretend” featuring A$AP Rocky is currently making its rounds on the radio.
D’Angelo first rose to fame with the 1995 release of his debut album Brown Sugar. He surprised fans with the release of his album Black Messiah which was released on December 15, 2014 on RCA Records, putting an end to his 14-year hiatus. The album has received critical acclaim from music critics and fans alike. The album debuted at No. 5 on the U.S. Billboard charts, selling over 117, 000 units.
In an album review published by The Guardian, journalist Paul Lester argued that Black Messiah is as much a political work as it is “a restatement of faith in the principles and sounds of the pre-digital era of black music.” He even compared the album’s quiet storm sound “conceptual coherence” to that of Marvin Gaye’s 1971 album What’s Going On.
For those who are familiar with D’Angelo’s earlier work may be surprised by the album’s content compared to his past works but there’s one thing for sure, D’Angelo is one of the most talented artists to ever touch the R&B scene and he has a timeless sound that many love.
