I went to an event on the September the 28th, as press but I allowed my excitement take me to this place, as a spectator. I am an avid hip hop fanatic and now an avid Queen of the Ring Follower. You can find them on youtube or simply go their site @ www.queenofthering.tv. There you will be able to see the latest battles and brush up on those you missed, you will even get to see interviews with some of your favorites. And if you are just now learning of them, you will become an addict. All of the women of Queen of the Ring or QOTR have a special talent. All of them are the best of their areas. They hail from clear across the country from Harlem USA, to New Orleans and California.
Tonight the card is full with super heavy hitters and the main events are ; 40 Barrs a women, who hails from Boston, a straight shooter from the hip. Pivotal precision and a word game play thats fortifiable in any battle rap arena and yes she is as beautiful as a rising sun. 40 is up against Bonnie Godiva, this lovely lady started out as a meek seemingly quite person with no real ability to eclipse beyond a sparring session. But the quite lady fought her way to the very plateau of Top Tier as a beast, her metaphors so deep and twisted that she is often asked to repeat herself in the battle, so that those who didn't get what she said the 1st time, can fully understand the impact of her bars.
Tonight she battles Young Gattas ,a true Pioneer to females in the battle rap arena. Gattas has battled pretty much all over the mid-west, way before there was a female battle rap league. Her introduction to how this game is played, was her going against her male counterparts and probably the only female who was fearless enough to do so. Her genius is acknowledged and hailed by some of the best in the business. There is no way to explain this tall masterpiece. Her lyrical flow is like the collision of paradise and the most gully of ghettos. She slings words like machetes in the air, and when they land you have found that literally you have lost your mind. While Gattas has a fondness for cracking jokes on her opponents the truth is that this woman has a skill that will take her wherever she wants to go. This battle has officially been posted to Queen of the ring tv. I am not picking a winner you decide, I can guarantee this is a hot topic.
Star battles, Looney Divine a femcee from California, with looks of a fem fatale and words of an original gangster. Looney hails from California and is very much a favorite where she comes from, I watched this battle and Looney held her own in the ring. Her delivery is not at 100% or at least it wasn't for this night. I have seen some of her other battles and witnessed a true genius at work. Those battles were a smaller crowd and intensely huddled, so I am guessing her pretty voice could not exceed past the ring far enough to reach all of us in the audience. I am not saying she lost this battle, I am just simply saying, I couldn't catch everything she said. I will however give her a shout out because she came for the event and brought sophistication and bars.
Next on the card was Chrissy Yamagucci another beautiful woman with an air of class but a spit game of the most ruthless rappers out here. With Chrissy everything is unexpected. Literally she is one of the best. However she did not show. We don't know what happened but we salute you and hope everything is okay. Yamagucci was going against, C3 a poet who from the gates of the sparring session, grabbed the crowd and earned her stripes. This woman is deeply lyrically inclined and whats most interesting about her is the way she slays with her metaphors. I guess you can say, she is flow'etically a diamond in the rough.
Then the card rounded out by bringing two women together who were there for the kill. Lexx Banko straight out of New Jersey, a short woman with the necessary roughness of a wild tiger. Each swing of her verses make people shout out with helpless abandonment, I caught up with Banko outside the boxing ring and I asked her simply what can we expect? She bluntly stated I came with a body bag. Some will say the first two rounds are debatable, but by the third round you will watch me walk away with the crown. I asked her what she does on her down time and she made it clear, she stays on her grind and that she is always up in the studios and writing her lyrics. She made it clear now that she has established herself as a Queen that she is going nowhere. Lexx Banko is up next to battle Official.
Official hails from the Big O.. A long way from New Orleans and not afraid to test the waters. I watched Official when she first arrived on the scene of New York Battle rap and I can verify this young lady is truly, OFFICIAL. Her bars are all, over the top. Her delivery is, fine tuned and her message is one of fatality for anyone who wishes to go against her. I interviewed her before she went up. I was excited and she was calm and self assured. I had to remind myself, that I was a professional, that I had previously interviewed stars who were household names and that Official was a major part of a job, that I needed to get done. But this writer likes that rapper. She will ascend to greatness if she sticks to her craft. I asked her whats next after the battle and she made me laugh when she said heck I am going back home. This city is too big for me. I like being familiar to my home and thats where I am going. It was an innocent and honest answer. I quickly came back with who is next on your list? Her reply was wait till I get in the ring. I thanked and wished her luck. When There was a moment of opportunity the first shot Official fired, was at Couture.
Couture comes straight out of Rhode Island. Truth be told, I never knew someone this clever could come from a semi suburb. But Couture is here to break all the confines of boundaries, concerning stereo types. This lady packs a full clip with automatic red dotted precision. You can watch her on queen of the ring tv. You will notice that with every battle she improves. Couture stays in stealth mode.
Official took shots at other people but I will let you watch the event for yourself. For certain there is a storm brewing and everyone knows how a hurricane can rip up a continent.
I run into Vague Sport; #Mr.GrindSeason #Rubberbandboys Host and one of the CEO's of QOTR. Vague is also a mean rap artist himself. Don'ing the Crown as a King of the Ring and a real paper chaser. One being his clothing line, Regalita tee shirts with such sayings as "Battle rap is a drug". This is a busy man and I know, I need to speak quickly before he disappears. I ask a question that is typical of me at this point, the only reason I ask it is because you can see their lives loud on camera. Whats next Vague? He smiles and says aww man there is so much going on, we are taking QOTR to television, we are going all the way this is a movement that has broken boundaries and we are taking it all the way. He also added that he is trying to finish an album with Babs, if she would slow down and give him some of her studio time. I smile, I understand him completely. Vague now has to go and I am looking for Debo, CEO and founder of QOTR.
I approach Debo letting him know who I am. He smiles openly and graciously gives me a tiny bit of his time. I start off by saying, you know this is big right? And he smiles even more now. He thanks me for the compliment and lets me know as Vague did that QOTR is making it to the flatscreen. He tells me of all his plans for the Queens. He instills in me ,that he wants all of these incredible women to make it to the top with him. He knows that the rumbling underground is only the anticipation of great things to come. He says many of the women want to take their careers to the next level.. That some want to act and other model, I interrupt to ask who would those models be? He quickly says; Phara Funeral, Shooney Da Rapper, Bonnie Godiva and 40 Barrs. He adds, why shouldn't they be models? They are all beautiful and intelligent. These opportunities will open more doors for them, they should be able to become the triple threats they want to be and if I can help them get there then it will be part of my plan. Then just as I get comfortable with the Big Guy he has to leave. As he walks away I realize, I am witnessing a shooting Star.
As I turn the corner, I prowl upon Myers Lansky #SLIMFRANKGANG President and first stop for the Queens of the Ring at rhe sparring sessions. Myers is a well respected member of the hip hop underworld. He himself is a threat with his own lyrical mastering and a man with many moves to make. I truly like Myers, a gentleman with an aura of respect and tranquility. But he like Vague is don'ed a King of the Ring. I ask Myers how he feels about the way QOTR is moving, he asserts that he is proud to be a part of something this monumental. He goes on to add that his respect is through the roof for all these women, who have guts and in the end the glory of being crowned Queens. He anticipates the future as being the road to a better time in life. It is obvious why Myers Lansky was hand picked for his position at QOTR he is a genuine soul, and while I place him in a favorable light I am aware that he is a killer in a battle. I say goodbye to Myers because everyone has something to do on this day and it begins with the red carpet for the Queens.
Wynter! She is the premier photographer for Queen of the Ring and I thought it would be a good idea to get a word in with her. Wynters photos are amazing. She is able to capture everything in the snap of a second and that takes a skill that I am doubting many can emulate. I ask her about those one of a kind shots and she replies. Its a passion. Its my art and these women here make every picture a defining moment, just by simply being authentic. Wynter has become such a staple of the battle league world she is requested by many high profile artists on their way to the top. Wynter has opened up a lane where there would have been only video cameras, catching the faces of those that compete, when they are in the mix of spitting ill words, the expressions are at best, priceless. An avid hip hop head herself, She admits that it is hard not to get caught up in the cross fire because things that are said in the ring can be so mind altering that you have to stop and think. Whatever Wynter's reasons are I am glad she is there. You can see what I am talking about by viewing her facebook page @ All Milliondollar-photo Wynter.
Before I close out, I want to say, there are many women who are a part of this league and on this night many showed up to support their homies, to rep the brand, or it could be to see, who they want to go up against next. What ever the reason they came it's just great to see them. Your among Royalty in this setting. I saw Precyse a go getter that made it to 106th and Park on BET.. Jai Smooth formerly of Albany New York, who now Don's the jacket of a Brooklyn babe. QB the Black Diamond a tiny lady with lungs of a dictator. Don Lady, the woman with a thousand sexy looks, and a one two punch that smokes all the weak artists out. Hazzy Hazzard a Baltimore Slick Lipped chick with a hidden compartment destruction. K-Prophet the fitted cap Don Datta'. Jaz the Rapper who continues to bring on the pain. Many where there, special Shout out to Sara Kana who reigns from her own league; Bras and Bra straps. Many of other leagues come to spectate. Its how you find out who the competitors are. There were some I had wished I saw. One of them being Tori Doe, with the appearance of a 16 year old little girl, who can outlast, withstand and destroy her opponents a Harlem Heiress. E Hart a women from the Bronx that is a high profile assassin who comes so hard that evidence of a body is is undetectable. Norma Baytes when a competitor dies a sudden death you know Norma was the one to take them out. Imah X a Philly rising star. Lady Caution who happened to be on the previous days card in the sparring sessions, a little lady with an arsenal of game. Dutchess Qony a Latin beauty with killer instinct and a vicious tongue. Persia, a new Queen to the ring hailing from Far Rockaway she was on The White Rapper Show hosted by MC Search, she earned her respect on television and now she is paving the way for mastery of lyrical precision. We will see her on the card in December. A little birdie told me that.
Many don't know this, Battle Rap is a home grown sport gaining momentum in the music industry. Once an underground sport and now a money making generator. If your lucky enough to know where these events are, I can assure you that this slice of entertainment is unlike anything you will ever be a part of. Hip Hop was once thought of as a musical phase. Now this is a trillion dollar industry. The only way to make it as an artist is to earn your respect with mastering your words. If your about this life and you step to a Queen please have a teflon vest available, because these women came to win and they will do that by any means necessary. Their game will be so ridiculously tight that you deserve to die a lyrical death if you don't come with adequate skill. Perhaps for those who feel like they can take a Queen out should start at the Sparring session. At least there, they won't make too much fun of you.
I will follow this movement and update you frequently because Queen of the Ring is making power moves and there are many great things to come. I want to bring you all along for the ride. Stay Tuned because once a Queen decides on a precision play the rest will be history.
